Everyone benefits when there is a sense of community, whether it be from an educational perspective, an individual perspective, or a business perspective. The definition of community is: the public in general; any group having work, interests, etc. in common. When communities have common working interests beneficial things happen.

In an educational setting, community is imperative to the success of schools and individuals within those schools and it’s boundaries. Individuals, educators, and businesses working together develop communities that can stand proud and continue to grow initiating success with outstanding means of probability. Even though there is not a direct correlation from businesses to individual student a sense of community is formed. Acknowledging Heights specifically, students are aware that businesses play an integral part in their education and education plays an integral part in the success of other organizations. For example students are aware that Fuddruckers is a contributor monetarily to the school, hurricane victims are recipients of community involvement, Special Olympics members are benefactors of community support, and cancer victims are assisted by the generosity of the school with direct correlation to community.

Greater accomplishments are forthcoming when individuals, schools, and businesses work in unison. Businesses are generating enormous effort to make a lasting impact concerning middle school students attending this school. One example would be Fuddruckers restaurant. The first Monday of every month 20% of total sales comes back to Heights generating money for the school. This is a great example of the community giving back to help educational endeavors. Another way that the community has given back to Heights is through art. When the former principal was at Heights he enlisted the help of the community to showcase art. With donations from the community, art was purchased and showcased throughout the school. Just by meandering through the halls, one can see community involvement; beautiful art is on display for everyone to enjoy.

An understanding of all children and families is needed so that a sense of community can be formed that includes all economic circumstances and ethnographic conditions. Later in this observation we will take a look at the Farmington community through different perspectives.
