UNM - San Juan Center Teacher Education Program

Philosophy, Key Beliefs, and Goals

In an effective classroom students should not only
know what they are doing, they should also know
     why and how.
     --Harry Wong

Our program seeks to prepare educators who will tech all students to high standards, and to teach them well.  This requires understanding that a teacher identifies each student's needs and strengths, and where they are in their learning, and then differentiates teaching strategies to address those strengths and needs.

Preparing pre-service teachers involves bothy course instruction and classroom experience, in order to gain understanding of curriculum and the strategies to teach it effectively.  This occurs ove time, throughout our program, in varied learning contexts, culminating in the student teahing experience.  Our students will be able to:
-Identify individual students' backgrounds, strengths, and learning needs.
-Differentiate curriculum and instruction to meet a range of student needs, and to enable all students to be successful learners..
-Communicate and collaborate with colleagues, families, and community  members in order to support their students' success.
We seek to model the importance of relationships, and emphasize the value of reflecting on and sharing feelins and ideas regarding the teaching and learning process.  Student teachers also need to observe, understand, and listen to their students.  This is an important key to the successful teaching practice of our students.
